Gunshot wounds #Moulagemonday

Gunshot wounds #Moulagemonday

For this week’s #MoulageMonday I wanted to talk about gunshot wounds.

Ever since I started out in medical simulation, gunshot wounds have been a makeup that is highly requested.

Gunshot wounds are an often small and understated injury, making them a great wound to practice with if you are new to Moulage and also meaning that that are relatively fast to create. This can vary however depending on the gun used. This is something that you will need to look into when planning your look and I recommend you attempt to find a reference image that matches the scenario that you are trying to create.

That being said there is definately a ‘standard’ way to do gunshot wounds if you do not have a specific guideline to work from and that is what this prosthetic piece is based on.

This piece is an encapsulated silicone Prosthetic, blendable with IPA and is sculpted in the basic round shape that I tend to lean towards when I am unable to find specific images to match my scenario.

You don’t need to use a Prosthetic for this though, you can create a look that is very similar with sculpt gel, wax and other direct to skin options and sometimes these can be just as effective as a prosthesis and sometimes can be quicker to apply depending where your strengths lie as an artist.

Gunshot wounds do not use a lot of product, no matter how you decide to build them up. This is great as it makes them the ideal wound to use within your practice. You can practice blending your edges using different products, building up wounds in different ways, colouring your Moulage using different products, as well as applying different types of blood using different techniques; all without using up your entire kit to do so!

I would recommend if you want to practice your techniques to build up basic gunshot wounds, perhaps a few next to each other. This way you can compare the final result easily and decide what technique you like best.

When I am colouring small gunshot wounds like this one I tend to like to let the blood speak for itself wherever I can. For this reason I opted to only use a very light coverage of bruise tone over and around the wound. I then topped it off with a selection of thick and runny bloods to complete the wound.

Do you do a lot of gunshot wounds in your Moulage? What is your favourite way to do them?

If you got this far, thank you for reading!
