Small Bite Prosthetic
I’ve had this piece laying around in my kit for a while now and I’ve never got round to using it; so for today’s Moulage Monday I decided to apply it.
This piece is the smaller of the two prosthetics from the Monster FX 'small Bite’ set. These pieces are designed to go together however I used the other one for a demonstration a little while back so was left with the one. To be honest I don't think that this is that much of an issue as although they create a great overall bite effect together, I personally feel that they are just as effective when used alone.
These pieces are incredibly soft and once applied feel just like skin. The cap plastic edges are super thin which makes seamless edges pretty easy to achieve. The edges are blended with IPA and I used a variety of colours from skin illustrator to colour it.
As I have very a light skin tone, the pieces came up pretty dark when they were first applied. I corrected this before adding any other details to that the blend from my skin to the piece was as close as I could get it.
Prosthetics pieces like things one are a great choice within a medical simulation environment as the seamless cap plastic edge makes for a high level of realism, ideal when you wish to create a fully immersive experience. Pieces like this can also be modified with tubes to allow for spraying blood and realistic bleeding although this is definately something that takes a lot of practice and trial and error.
I used a different removal technique then I usually do when I was taking this piece off and I found it to be really effective. I started with a healthy amount of Vaseline smothered over the whole piece. This removed the blood and loosened the edges. I then worked the Vaseline under these edges and used it to peel the piece gently off of the skin. This was surprisingly effective and is definitely something I will be doing more regularly. I then used Isopropyl Alcohol to clean up the rest of the colour and glue, before cleaning the skin with soap and moisturising to ensure that I am keeping the skin healthy. This is effective although it is worth noting that IPA can be very drying on the skin and it is worth considering where the product is place before doing this. I would avoid this technique on more delicate areas like the face.
Overall I was really pleased with how this piece applied and I definitely think that it has its place in the world of Moulage. What do you think?
